HEALTH ON THE STREET:  NEIGHBORS HELPING NEIGHBORS WITH THEIR HEALTH

Health on the Streets is an integral component of the Future Builders Community health Initiative.  It was modeled after similar successful programs throughout the nation, which emanated out of a request from community members who said they wanted someone who “looks like me and talks like me” to improve the quality of health and human services in the community.

Health on the Streets utilizes Community Health Advocates (CHA) and local community volunteers who work to:  increase community knowledge of health care resources; improve community access to health care services; increase community participation in health education programs; maintain contact with persons at risk due to health-related problems; identify community needs and obstacles to quality health care.

PENNIES FOR HIV CAMPAIGN

The staff of Future Builders organized a detailed plan to execute a penny campaign to support HIV prevention and education programs in the Little Rock/Pulaski County area.  The students and citizens of Little Rock and Pulaski County donated pennies and spare change to support HIV prevention and education programs.

This penny campaign is a year-round fundraising project.  Future Builders actively seeks partnering organizations such as the local school districts, businesses, colleges/universities and churches to assist with this countywide project.

THE PRINCIPLE OF PERSONAL SUCCESS

The Principle of Personal Success is a life skills program funded by the Arkansas Transitional Employment Assistance Board. The eight module program aims to increase the chance of teenagers between 13-16 being self sufficient, avoiding drugs and not becoming parents or contracting STDs. Using two proven curriculums, The 7 Habits of Highly Successful Teens by Sean Cobey and Making a Difference by Loretta Jemmott, Principles of Personal Success advocates self-motivation, career development, abstinence and sexual negotiation skills as means of planning and reaching obtainable goals.

Future Builders, Inc. executes this program in partnership with the Pine Bluff Housing Authority and the Pine Bluff Parks and Recreation Department.  Once a week the staff of Future Builders and community volunteers present a one-hour session to teens at Belle Meade Housing complex and the Merrill Community Center in Pine Bluff, Arkansas.  These sessions are composed of 15 to 20 teens.
